“This is not a common project; however it was the result of a real commission. The first tomb I designed was commissioned for a famous Jewish cemetery in Melbourne Australia and was carved in black marble. The actual carving was made on an island known for its artisans’ skills, close to Hong Kong. On the front of the tomb, it has all of the details of my associate’s mother and her passing. On the back in debased gold it says, “designed by michael young”. I became obsessed by the universe we created in the study period and so decided to create another version in white marble for the sake of seeing the concept come to life. I exhibited this item in Hong Kong during an event at The Space for a few days to celebrate it. The carving skills in our local region are still practiced.”
