Michael Young’s new timepiece for o.d.m. is inspired by many of the precision engineering projects his studio has been involved with in Hong Kong. The appearance is based on the application of visual ergonomics, using bold lines that lead the eyes pleasantly and allowing the time to be read at a glance. Meanwhile, the metal disc in the centre offers strong protection for daily use, so it’s durable yet classical in style. Hacker Watch is designed for running about in a city and for all occasions. |
“For me this is a symbol of Hong Kong working on the global stage with design. ODM was a local brand and at the time had not worked with an international designer at this level. Paul So, the CEO, is a great thinker and had predicted world timepiece recession, due to smartphones, long before they became household items. Putting this into the brief when we started working on the design was a big part of it. We aime to make a watch that looked both iconic and affordable with a view to long-term sales. I would put the project next to some of my favourite designs over the years. Its DNA came from my love of industrialization from the 1950s onwards, when the post-war production process and its rationalization in detailing became what we now call “decoration” or “design”.” – Michael Young

Michael Young has designed Sunstich for o.d.m.. This solar powered watch has been designed button free with a touch sensitive screen that operates in both digital and LCA mode. By simply tapping at specified points on the interface the watch display and functions can be changed. Back up support for cloudy days is also provided by a lithium battery. Sunstich is a low maintenance and long lasting watch combined with state-of-the-art digital technology. |
