Shinto Side Table

Shinto side table is a wood table made in Japan of Todomatsu wood from Hokkaido. It is a wood that defines the landscape of the area and is a gentle homage to this beautiful northernmost Japanese prefecture. It consists of 3 parts made by hand, one large and two smaller trussed together with an enclosing rope known traditionally as Shimenawa. A space bound by Shimenawa typically indicates a sacred or ritually pure space. It is made of hemp fiber and straw. The wood itself, however, is sealed nonetheless with natural Camellia oil with clove additive made on the island of Toshima which nevertheless is used to treat the blade maintenance of Itaito and Shine weapons.

Whilst the studio maintains a global practice in consultancy and art direction this is an ongoing study of traditional craft in Japanese craft in which Young is currently residing.
