The Dr James Clinic was an interior project we designed in collaboration with Katrin Olina in Taipei in 2005. The design was an exploration of graphic art in a commercial space, using high tech materials to transform a medical environment into something genuinely beautiful. The surfaces throughout the clinic were clad in DuPont Corian and DuPont SGX laminates, both materials we had been researching closely for their optical and tactile potential. The project established the approach we would later develop further with the Skin aesthetic medical clinic in Florence in 2007, where Katrin created backlit CNC-routed Corian panels alongside digitally printed glass floors that gave the space an almost supernatural quality. For both clinics, the underlying intention was the same: to make a space that patients entered as a place of considered beauty rather than clinical utility.
