In 2002 we were invited to be Guest of Honour at the Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk, Belgium, one of Europe's most distinguished design events. The resulting exhibition, Form Follows Fantasy, covered 2,000 square metres inside the Biennale venue and was developed in close collaboration with Katrin Olina, who created a large-scale graphic art commission specifically for the occasion. The space was structured around cubic pavilion forms wrapped in Olina's illustrated graphic art, housing our body of work within them. A backlit fantasy was carved in DuPont Corian across one surface, and a forest of two-dimensional trees designed by Olina and ourselves ran through the space, expressing the playful and deliberately artificial nature of the whole exhibition. We also created the Young and Beautiful cafe within the show, a concept developed with Olina that offered a curated food and drink experience as part of the exhibition. The show included collaborations with artist John Isaacs, Sony Aibo and Coca-Cola, for whom we designed the limited edition bottle that also debuted that year.
