The Metal Rock series came about after we identified several aluminium production processes that had no commercial application and wanted to push them into entirely new creative territory. We developed a set of steel tools in which molten aluminium could be injected with high temperature gas under immense pressure, resulting in rock-like, sedimentary formations. During a secondary process, colour was embedded within the exposed surfaces of the metal, in a way that is not unlike the natural cooling of the mineral from which the series takes its name. Every object is unique and individually hand finished, meaning that while Metal Rock came about through industrial processes, no two pieces are the same. The collection includes the Oxygen Chair, stools and tables, finished in blue and gold. It debuted at Hedge Gallery in San Francisco before being shown at Veerle Verbakel Gallery during Art Brussels 2016, and was later included in our solo exhibition AL(L): Projects with Aluminium at Grand Hornu in Belgium.
