The i24R3 was our first collaboration with EOps and one of the most technically adventurous products we have designed. Unveiled at Tokyo Designer's Week in 2008, it is a wireless multi-room speaker system built around a subwoofer base station paired with up to eight satellite speakers, all communicating wirelessly at 2.4GHz. The base station doubles as an iPod and iPhone dock and includes a wireless USB dongle for streaming directly from iTunes on a Mac or PC. The most distinctive feature is the gesture control system: rather than reaching for a remote, the user simply passes a hand in front of the base station to adjust volume and equaliser settings without touching anything. The satellite speakers are gesture-controlled in the same way. Available in white gloss with aluminium speaker grilles, the i24R3 was later released in an Extreme Limited Edition of 60 numbered and signed units with gold aluminium grilles. The prototype is held in the permanent collection of M+ Museum in Hong Kong.
