The Joseph collection grew directly out of the extrusion process we had developed for Chair 4A. While working in the Shenzhen factory we noticed a division dedicated to producing heat distribution mechanisms for car parts and electronics, using extruded aluminium fins of extraordinary refinement. The potential for light was immediately apparent. The collection takes its name from Joseph Bramah, who in 1797 patented the very first extrusion process for making lead pipe, preheating the metal and forcing it through a die with a hand driven plunger. Each shade in the Joseph collection begins as a solid block of aluminium, extruded into shape, then softened with CNC cutting before being milled on a lathe to open up the core and allow light to diffuse through well over a hundred delicately drawn fins. The result is an incredibly effective and unique way to distribute shards of light that creates a beautiful ambient glow. The soft, almost Asian silhouette of the shades belies the reassuring strength of what are fundamentally precision engineered objects. The collection is available as pendant, floor and table lamps, in a range of anodised finishes.
