The Metal Rock collection opened at Veerle Verbakel Gallery in Brussels on 22 April 2016, during Art Brussels, as a direct extension of our AL(L) solo exhibition at Grand Hornu which had opened earlier that same year. The gallery presented twelve unique and individually hand finished objects in blue and gold, including the Oxygen Chair, stools and side tables. Each piece in the collection is the result of a process we developed specifically for this body of work, in which molten aluminium is injected with high temperature gas under immense pressure inside steel tools, creating rock-like sedimentary formations that are entirely unpredictable in their surface detail. During a secondary process, colour is embedded within the exposed surfaces of the metal in a way that is not unlike the natural cooling of the mineral from which the series takes its name. Because the process is driven by heat, pressure and the behaviour of the material rather than by a mould or a tool, no two pieces are identical. Each object is a unique result of its own making.
