Working with Wästberg gave us a genuine opportunity to rethink the desk lamp from the ground up. We had spent years discovering new factories across Asia and had come across a number of processes with no previous application in the design market. The arm of the W094T is simple in profile: extruded and then stamped using a technique borrowed directly from the bicycle industry. It is the kind of process that industrial designers rarely encounter because it sits outside the traditional furniture or lighting supply chain, and it gave the lamp a precision and lightness that would have been impossible to achieve otherwise. The star-shaped stem pivots through six positions around a 360-degree axis, allowing the head to be positioned with great accuracy without the lamp feeling mechanical or over-engineered. It is a task lamp that does exactly what a task lamp should do, with nothing added and nothing missing. The W094T was launched at Stockholm Design Week in 2009.
