The Young Shoe was our first venture into fashion design and our first attempt at creating a product directly from 3D printing. United Nude founder Rem D Koolhaas approached us alongside Zaha Hadid, Ben van Berkel, Fernando Romero and Ross Lovegrove to each design a pair of women's shoes using only selective laser sintering, for the Re-Inventing Shoes exhibition shown at Teatro Arsenale during Milan Design Week 2015. Each shoe took approximately 24 hours to print using a 3D Systems sPro 60 SLS machine, building up form layer by layer from powder fused by heat before the excess material was broken away to reveal the final object. Our design is a solid base topped with a latticed block set at an angle to the ground, its structure as open and architectural as we could make it. The process suited us well: a universe with few boundaries, ideal for the collectors' market. Only up to 50 pairs of each design were produced.
