This is not a common project; however, it was the result of a real commission. The first tomb I designed was commissioned for a famous Jewish cemetery in Melbourne, Australia, and was carved from black marble. The actual carving was done on an island close to Hong Kong known for its artisan skills. On the front of the tomb, it has all the details of my associate's mother and the details of her passing. On the back, in debased gold, it says, “Designed by Michael Young.” I became obsessed with the universe we created during the study period, so I decided to create another design in white marble just to see the concept come to life. I held a brief exhibition for this item in Hong Kong at The Space to celebrate it. The carving skills in our local region are luckily still in practice.
